With a hatchback body disguised by avant-garde styling, the Volkswagen Arteon sedan is as pretty as it is practical. Unfortunately, the four-door’s fascinating appearance gets lost in translation when it comes to how it drives. Sure, it has a peppy, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and stimulating steering feedback, but those qualities still don’t make it particularly engaging. Although the VW’s cabin has limo-like passenger space and can hold a lot of cargo under its rear hatch, the interior isn’t nearly as luxurious as the top-of-the-line model is expensive. Still, the Arteon is easily the most elegant-looking model to bear the brand’s iconic logo, and it shows that passenger cars remain relevant at VW—at least for now.
